New Pet Parent Checklist: What Your Dog or Cat Really Needs
Bringing home a new dog or cat is equal parts joy and mild panic. Pet stores will happily sell you forty things; your new companion actually needs about ten. Here’s the honest checklist we’d hand to any first-time pet parent — what to buy before day one, and what can wait.
Before they come home
- Two bowls — one for food, one for water. Ceramic or stainless steel stay cleaner than plastic and don’t slide as much.
- A bed they can claim — a washable donut bed gives nervous newcomers a safe spot that smells like them within days.
- Food matched to their age — puppy, kitten, adult and senior formulas really do differ. If you can, start with whatever they were eating before and transition slowly over a week.
- A collar with an ID tag, plus a leash or harness — for cats, a breakaway collar; for dogs, a flat leash before any retractable experiments.
- A litter box and litter (cats) or poop bags (dogs) — unglamorous, non-negotiable.
The first two weeks
Once the basics are covered, the next purchases solve the problems that show up fast: boredom and mess. A couple of rope or puzzle toys keep a dog’s teeth off your furniture; a scratching post saves your sofa from a cat doing what cats do. A simple grooming brush, started early, turns into a bonding ritual instead of a wrestling match later.
An enzymatic cleaner deserves a spot under your sink before the first accident, not after. Regular household cleaners mask odors from humans, but pets can still smell the spot — and they return to it.
What can wait
Fancy water fountains, GPS trackers, automatic feeders, costumes — all fine, none urgent. Wait until you know your pet’s personality. The dog who destroys plush toys in minutes needs rubber; the cat who ignores the expensive tower will sleep in the cardboard box it came in. Buying after you know them wastes far less money.
One tip that saves real money
Buy consumables (litter, bags, treats) in larger sizes, but buy gear (beds, harnesses, toys) one at a time until you’ve seen what survives a month. Most “starter bundle” regret comes from gear, not consumables.
